Mill Gate Shopping Centre's new safety scheme for children
Today's shopping centres are very busy places – and Mill Gate is no exception. To most, it is easy to find your way around, but to a small child, it can be a bewildering and frightening place, especially if they become separated from their parents even for a very short space of time. Kiddy Care is a step–bys–tep procedure for parents, children – and all those working in the shopping centre – in the event of a child getting lost in Mill Gate.
For adults ...
- Encourage your child to stay close to you at all times.
- On young children, hold their hand, use reins or wrist straps.
- NEVER leave children in an unsupervised area.
- Tell your children about Mill Gate's Kiddy Care scheme.
- Make sure you & your children know ...
- our Kiddy Care logo.
- our Information Desk location (next to the Kiddy Cabs).
- If you become separated from your child...
- in a shop: go to the till and tell the person working there.
- in the mall: go to any shop displaying the Kiddy Care logo and tell a member of staff – or notify staff on our Customer Information Desk (next to the Kiddy Cabs).
What happens next ...
- The staff will undertake a search of the immediate area.
- If your child is found, they will ask the child to identify you before reuniting you with your child. PLEASE DO NOT BE OFFENDED IF WE ASK FOR PROOF OF IDENTITY.
- If your child is not found, they will notify our Security Team who undertake surveillance via CCTV.
- They will notify all staff on the malls.
- If they are unable to locate your child, the police will then be notified.
For Children ...
If you are lost and cannot see the person with who you are shopping:
- Stand still
- Look around to see if you can see them
- Shout the person's name out loud
- DO NOT RUN AROUND
- If you see the person you are with, go back to them and hold their hand.
- If you are in a shop and still can't see the person, go to the shop till or checkout and tell the person working there that you are lost.
- If you are in the mall and still can't see the person, go to any shop with the Kiddy Care logo and tell them you are lost.
- NEVER TELL ANYONE ELSE
For Mill Gate Staff ...
If you find a lost child, or you are approached by a child who is lost ...
- Squat down to their level so you are closer to their height.
- Show them your name badge (if you have one) and/or tell them your name and that you are here to help them.
- Ask them their name.
- Undertake a brief search of the immediate area; most lost children are simply obscured from their parents/family and a simple search will locate them.
- If the search doesn't find them, notify Security Control and CCTV immediately.
- Stay with the child in the location you found them. Keep talking to them and reassuring them everything with be ok.
- If anyone claims the child, only release the child to a responsible adult - and make sure the child can identify them. IF IN ANY DOUBT - RING THE POLICE.
